CullaChange Dyehouse - Penrith, Sydney
About The service
CullaChange is a family business that strives to refresh, revive, rectify and recycle the clothing and homewares for the public. From refreshing black clothes, to colour-matching for a wedding; covering up fading on lounges, to changing the colour of curtains for a new decor. CullaChange has decades of experience dyeing all kinds of items, and strives to tweak historical dyeing traditions and techniques to meet the dynamic needs of modern fabrics and fibres.
A history of cullachange
In the late 1970s, after selling her beauty business, Rosemary embarked on a new venture—a denim stone-washing factory in Marrickville. Little did she know that this would lead her to become the creator of one of the last textile dyeing hubs in Australia. As she built her stone-washing empire, one simple request changed everything: a customer asked if she could dye fabric to a specific colour. Agreeing to the challenge, word quickly spread, and soon customers were coming to have their jeans, shirts, and even homewares dyed in unique, vibrant colours. Serving her customers through the roller door of her Marrickville factory, she decided to set up a more professional shopfront at her terrace house in Riley Street, Surry Hills. Over thirty-five years later, Rosemary has grown CullaChange with her vivacity for colour and creativity, building a cult following of “dyehard" colour-changing customers Australia-wide.
Sadly, Rosemary passed away after a gallant battle with illness in 2024. Her daughter Jess has now stepped into Rosemary's gigantic colourgul shoes. In the mid-90s, Jess started working at Cullachange as a teen. Working in the shop as a colour consultant she soon moved out to the dyehouse to train as a dyer. After 20 years, she decided on a career change, becoming a Primary school teacher, albeit continuing to work part-time doing speciality colour matching. When Rosemary was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020, Jess dropped teaching immediately and came back full-time to be by Rosemary’s side.
From Jess:
"The business has been a member of the family as far back as I can remember, the team, now ColourChange Co. team and customers have always been our pride and joy. We are temporarily paring the business back to basics for a short while to rebuild its foundations and see it bloom in full colour as a legacy to Mum. We want to thank our customers for your support and loyalty. It’s because of YOU that we will continue this unique and colourful service."
